Introduction

Consumers are gaining a larger influence on physicians and their prescribing decisions as the relationship between patients and physicians evolves. This trend analysis pack identifies consumers’ current level of interaction with the available online health information and services. It also presents the interest level among consumers to use each of the services in the future.

Scope

  • Results from 3,760 interviews with consumers in Europe and the US regarding health information requirements and online behavior
  • Insight into how consumers would like their relationship with physicians to change and which eHealth tools can help them to do so
  • Investigation of consumers’ experience of using specific eHealth tools and their level of desire to use these tools in the future

Highlights

2 in 5 surveyed consumers are using the Internet to seek health information at least once per month and are predominantly doing so for their own needs. The level of online searching for health information has grown to the extent that consumers are using online search engines more commonly than books and magazines to seek healthcare information.

Consumers are keen on their relationship with physicians to change. They would like to have the opportunity to use the Internet to schedule appointments with their physician, to have the ability to email their physician and also for the technology to be available to allow online consultations between the patient and physician.

The current usage of eHealth tools like practice websites, online discussion forums and telemedicine services is very low; however, there is significant demand for such services in the future. 50% of surveyed consumers would like to use disease management tools in the future, and 61% would like to use physician practice websites in the future.

Reasons to Purchase

  • Identify the key opportunities for your company from an understanding of the current and prospective eHealth markets in Europe and the US
