Highlights
Over 300 licensing, market/distribution, research/discovery and other deal types involving APAC-based companies and research institutes were reported between Q3 2009 and Q2 2010. Most were licensing deals and market, promotion and distribution agreements, with the majority targeting territories within APAC.Japan signed twice as many deals as most other APAC nations, driven by its large pharmaceutical companies. Australia followed, with its strong research base and biotechnology industry, while South Korea outpaced larger rivals India and China due to a more developed economy and business environment which has attracted international partners.Research and development deals will increase as capabilities and capacity in APAC grow, with much of this activity driven by universities and research institutes. Greater flexibility in deal types and structures—including co-promotion agreements and option-based deals—is likely to continue to boost the activity seen in the region.
